Lucio Battisti

Lucio Battisti 1943 - 1997
Probably one of the most well known italian singers and songwriters who can easily be compared to the likes of Cat Steven and Chris Rea as far as Battisti's lyrics go, quite a part of which were written by the song writer Mogol ( Giulio Rapetti )

Lucio Battisti and his contemporary
music colleagues in the italian pop scene.

A lot can be said about the italian pop scene in the late 60s and 70s.
A great period of protest and student revolution, and in this period the most proliphic song writers were Francesco Guccini and Francesco De Gregori, who apart from great melodies also sung about the problems of the day.

Claudio Baglioni was another love song writer and singer, and Lucio Battisti was not considered to be a political songwriter as was Antonello Venditti from the mid seventies.
Despite this Lucio certainly left his mark on the music scene in this period, and most Italians who were in their teens or older, grew up listening to and loving the songs of Lucio Battisti.

If you were young and grew up at the time Cat Stevens was big on the music scene, then you probably remember his songs, where you were when these were played on the radio etc.
The same goes for the Italian music listeners who today cherish most precious memories which come back to mind the moment one hears a Lucio Battisti song even today.

Lucio Battisti cover versions and world wide acclaim
Lucio Battisti songs have been covered, sung or performed even long before Lucio became at all famous or even known in Italy.
At the start of his career Battisti just played in some local bands, but also wrote a few songs for these same bands.

In the late 60s a US rock group called Grass Roots had a USA wide hit with Battisti's composition ' Balla Linda ' ( Dance Linda ) and believe it or not, the 1969 top charting UK single If Paradise Is Half as Nice, performed by the then famous group Amen Corner , which reached nr. 1 in the UK charts ... was non other then a cover version of Lucio Battisti's ' Il Paradiso '

Lucio Battisti died on the 9th of September 1997 in a Milan hospital at the age of 55
but his music, his lyrics and those of Mogol will outlive most treasured memories for most Italians today and probably quite a few music fans worldwide who happened to be on holiday in Italy in the late sixties through to the early nineties, and even today, if you visit italy and listen to the radio, you will still hear Lucio's songs being played.

This web site about Lucio Battisti is a very humble tribute to one of last centuries' great artists and is probably one of the very few web sites on Lucio Battisti in english. This website is also to be considered as a sincerely felt tribute to one of Italy's most prolific and capable singers and songwriters since the history of italian pop music began.

Battisti album pictureLucio Battisti the song writer, song composer and singer
Lucio Battisti started his career as a songwriter with songs such as Per una Lira, Dolce di Giorno, Uno in Piu, but his career and fame really took off when he joined forces with the italian songwriter Giulio Rapetti know under his artistic name of Mogol.
Mogol's texts and Battisti's higher pitched voice made an incredible cocktail of melodic songs which if one understood their italian content, were and still are like short dreams and stories in which one can very easily lose oneself in complete listening pleasure.

Lucio Battisti english album Lucio Battisti - the English Album
Lucio Battisti tried to break through in the english language pop scene and debuted in the USA in 1977 with his album 'Images', which contained some of his older hits sung in english and a few new ones. Not much came of this which is a real pity as only the translation into english can render any kind of idea of Battisti's and Mogol's lyrics.
In 1978, back in Italy, Battisti released the album 'Una Donna per Amico' which became the best selling Mogol-Battisti album ever.

Battisti and Mogol in 21 days on horseback from Milan to Rome in 1970
Lucio Battisti, Mogol and other two friends undertook a three week journey on horse back from Milan to Rome in 1970. Partially for fun, as a personal bet against doubters, but also as an exploratory journey into the self .
You can read about this feat at the following link, which is in italian but there are some nice photos of Lucio Battisti and Mogol.

Brief history of the life of
Lucio Battisti
Lucio Battisti was born in the small town of Poggio Bustone, in Rieti, Italy on March 5, 1943. With his family he moved to Rome in 1950 and 10 years later Battisti was playing in small local bands, amongst them the Campioni ( The Champions ).
Lucio Battisti soon moved to Milan in the north of Italy, at the time and partially still today considered the hub of the publishing world, music productions and italian tv stations.
Christine Leroux a french talent scout helped Lucio get his song writing and singing career under way, and Battisti wrote several songs for other bands and musicians in 1966:
Per Una Lira for the Ribelli, Dolce di Giorno for the Dik Dik, and Uno in Più for Riki Maiocchi.
In this same year 1966 Battisti made a debut as a singer with the first cooperation with Mogol on the hit single Per una Lira.
During this time some of his songs in cover versions made the charts in the USA and in the UK, see box on the left - but the real breakthrough came in 1969 with his album Lucio Battisti, which contained such great Battisti hits as: Acqua Azzurra, Acqua Chiara and Mi Ritorni in Mente.
From then on the only way was up especially after teaming up with Mogol.
In 1969 Battisti won the Festivalbar - an Italian song contest competition, with his famous Acqua Azzurra, Acqua Chiara, and also won the Festivalbar the next year 1970 with the song: Fiori Di Rosa Fiori di Pesco.
